In the summer of 2004, the parish council first began discussions aimed at restoration and improvements to the war memorial garden. The garden was becoming a cause for concern as the paving and wall were damaged; the gates were in need of repair. It was also felt that many of the plants had come to the end of their lives and that the soil needed improvement. The advice of Mr Roger Burnett, Parks and Countryside Manager at Scarborough Borough Council, was obtained and a public meeting was called.
There was a good attendance of interested villagers and general agreement was reached, although there were some misgivings in the village about suggestions for a radical makeover of the site and it is hoped that a compromise can be reached. It was felt that some resurfacing and provision of disabled access was necessary but there was strong opposition to any removal of the roses originally given by the WI, the gates or the boundary posts. The feeling of the meeting was that a boundary should be kept around the garden, that there should be some resurfacing and that there should be disabled access provided by means of a graduated entrance. It was felt that the design should be softened with the use of less regimented beds and surfaces. The use of aromatic shrubs, an extra seat and perhaps a small tree was agreed. An idea that villagers be asked to provide cuttings was greeted with enthusiasm and is was also agreed that it would be pleasing if the school were to be involved in some way. Mr Burnett later presented an amended design for the War Memorial garden. The new design includes disabled access and a new self-binding gravel surface as well as fresh shrubs and perennials and an extra seat in the garden, for quiet contemplation. The Parish Council was pleased to accept the new design, which incorporates the original gates and retains a boundary while giving the area a fresh look. The next stage of the project involved finding funding and it was hoped that costs could be kept down by involving community groups as much as possible in the creation of the new garden. Members of the parish council then set about holding various local fundraisers including a coffee evening, a jumble sale and a book sale, which have all been generously supported and which raised around £1,100.
Funding was sought from various areas and sums of £2000 and £3275 respectively, were granted from Scarborough Borough Council and Yorventure. This meant that the project could now go ahead and work began in the summer of 2007. Resurfacing and replanting were completed in time for the Remembrance Day service in November. It had been decided that a seat be placed near the aromatic shrubbery within the garden, to allow for quiet contemplation. Local craftsman Anthony Shackleton was commissioned to do the work and an oak seat has now been placed on the site. The Remembrance Garden is now complete and the plants and shrubs are growing and maturing. It has become one of the most attractive areas of the village and the Parish Council would like to express its thanks to all those who have helped to make it so. |
